WHAT WE DO
CREATING BIOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS FOR BIOLOGICAL PROBLEMS
We develop and deliver innovative biotechnology to smallholder farmers. Striga, a weed that affects nearly 40 million farms in sub-Saharan Africa, can completely ruin a farmer’s harvest. By selecting for specific strains of the fungus FOXY, farmers can use our biological solutions, instead of chemical herbicides. When crop yields increase, farmers are able to feed their families better and improve their lives.
COMPONENTS OF THE TOOTHPICK PROJECT:
01
THE TECHNOLOGY
The patented technology was developed by Dr. David Sands, a world-renowned plant pathologist. We have trained 13 scientists in 12 countries to continue the research on FOXY as a bioherbicide.
02
WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT
85% of Kenyan farmers are women, so when crop yield increases, the quality of life for women and families will also improve.
03
NGO PARTNERSHIPS
The most difficult aspect of technology delivery in sub-Saharan Africa is getting it the last mile. Partnerships with NGOs allow the Toothpick Project to distribute the product to the farmers. Current partners include the Liberty Initiators Network, Welthungerhilfe, and FIPS-Africa.
04
GLOBAL COLLABORATION
Finding a solution for striga cannot be done in just one lab, rather it must include experts from across the world. The Toothpick Project's team includes people from Africa, Europe. and the U.S.
